St Aloysius College

ADAMS RITE was at the forefront of the refurbishment of St Aloysius’ College in Islington, supplying over 70 cam action door closers for use on exterior doors.

Boasting a star studded alumni, including Chelsea and England footballer Joe Cole, award-winning actor Sir Michael Gambon and even the late, great Peter Sellers, St Aloysius’ College is a Roman Catholic school with a proud tradition as the oldest of its type within the archdiocese of Westminster.

An iconic structure and focal point for the community, the school benefited from the multi billion pound budget of the “Building Schools for the Future” scheme which has the aim of regenerating most of Britain’s secondary schools.

Dover based fenestration experts, Prima Systems undertook the design, procurement, manufacture and installation of 58 external classroom doors, bespoke new windows and curtain walling as well as the total refurbishment of all retained windows.
Prima Systems turned to Adams Rite’s Cam Action Closer for all the aluminium doors in the schools project.

When specifying doors for school applications, the door closer is a key feature.  The doors have to be opened easily, even by the youngest children or those with a disability, in order to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act and meet the requirements of BS 8300: 2009 Design of Buildings And Their Approaches To Meet The Needs Of Disabled People.

The advantage of the cam action design for door closers is that the door will open with less pushing or pressure at the beginning of the opening cycle, which is the most strenuous part of opening a door.

Yet, for fire protection and other security reasons, the door then has to close automatically, reliably and in a controlled way, so the door does not “swing shut” and cause a hazard to following pupils.

The DC 330 model of Cam Action Closer was fitted at St Aloysius, with it’s body made from a high performance silicon alloy for extra strength and durability.  Featuring an adjustable closing force of CEN sizes 1-4 the DC300 has an attractive silver finish to complement the high efficiency design.

Adams Rite initially supplied around 50 closers, a figure that was to increase to 74 when a decision was made to replace some steel doors with aluminium ones in order to adhere to Part L of Building Regulations and achieve the PAS 24 standard.  Part L refers to the conservation of fuel and power, while products certified to the PAS 24 standard have resisted a series of known professional attacks, and static and dynamic loading.

With over one hundred miles between the Prima Systems office and the site, the installation team elected to stay over in temporary accommodation during the week to ensure that there were no delays in completing the project.

Brett Halfpenny, Project Manager for Prima Systems, said of the project:

“The general variety and scope of the project was challenging with all new-build and refurbishment work being completed in a live school on a logistically and geographically challenging site.  We were in charge of regenerating the façade and perimeter doors, and that involved using a lot of different products, and making sure that the specification was spot on for each item.

“Clearly the doors are going to see high levels of pupil traffic so we also needed components that were robust and would require minimal maintenance.  Adams Rite’s cam action closer range was certainly the best option and we have had no problems with the hardware since installation.
